Mechanical Thrombectomy

Mechanical thrombectomy is an intervention designed to treat blood clots, enhancing vascular health and alleviating associated symptoms. This procedure aims to restore normal blood flow by removing or dislodging the clot. Mechanical thrombectomy offers a minimally invasive alternative to open procedures for clot removal.

Conditions Treated

Mechanical thrombectomy is primarily used to treat vein conditions related to blood clots, including:

Procedure Overview

  • Preparation

Mechanical thrombectomy is typically conducted under local anesthesia or light sedation, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.

  • Guided insertion

A specialized catheter is inserted through a small incision near the clot. Dr. Tawfik uses imaging technology, such as fluoroscopy, to guide the catheter to the precise location of the clot.

  • Clot removal

Once the catheter reaches the clot, it is used to break up or suction out the thrombus. Different devices, like aspiration catheters or thrombolytic agents, can be utilized to remove the clot effectively.

  • Catheter removal & recovery

After the clot is successfully removed, the catheter is removed, and you’ll be closely monitored during the recovery period. Dr. Tawfik will provide guidance on any post-procedure care and any necessary medications to prevent further clot formation.

FAQs

The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the location, size, and nature of the clot. On average, mechanical thrombectomy can take anywhere from one to three hours.

While mechanical thrombectomy effectively removes existing clots, it does not guarantee that new clots will not form. Additional preventive measures and follow-up treatments may be recommended.

Recovery varies among individuals, but most patients can return to normal activities within a few days. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure the clot does not return.
